DIY Volcano

Did someone say volcano?

Are you ready for a science experiment? If there is one thing that children love, it’s to watch things explode. Volcanoes look fascinating on tv or in movies as they are erupting with pools of hot lava. This activity brings a volcano right to you in your own backyard. It is very simple and will leave you and your children amazed.

Supplies Needed

  • empty water bottle

  • 1 cup water

  • 4 tablespoons baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon dish soap

  • 1 cup vinegar

  • red food coloring

  • scissors

Directions

  • Take the empty water bottle and cut the top/neck off.

  • Place the water bottle on the surface where you will be doing the experiment.

  • Combine the water, baking soda, dish soap, and food coloring in the water bottle and carefully mix.

  • With the kids gathered around at a safe distance, pour the vinegar into the water bottle and watch the explosion happen.

For Even More Fun

If you want to add some creativity to your project, use a glass mason jar and sculpt a dough structure around it to make it look like a real volcano.

  • Combine 6 cups flour, 3 cups salt, and 3 cups water together. Knead the mixture to create a dough.

  • Place your glass jar on a baking pan and start sculpting your very own volcano around the jar.

  • Place in the oven at 225* F until the dough is completely dry.

  • Skip to step 3 of the directions and continue.
