This easy, no-mess project encourages creativity and fine motor skills, and best of all—it’s completely biodegradable!

With just a few simple ingredients, your little ones can create tasty treats for backyard birds, all while learning about the importance of caring for wildlife. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get outside and do a little birdwatching! Follow our step-by-step guide below and get ready to welcome some new feathered visitors to your yard.

  • 2 Ice Cream Cones
  • Peanut Butter
  • Plain Cheerios
  • Bird Seed
  • 2 Pipe Cleaners

Let’s get started.

  • Cut the tip off the top of the ice cream cone and thread a pipe cleaner through. On the bottom end, tie a knot big enough so it won’t go through the hole. Take the other end and make a loop and twist. You can substitute Twine for the pipe cleaner if you prefer.
  • Spread the peanut butter over the entire cone and then place cheerios around each side.
  • Place a cone in a bowl of bird seed and gently press down as you or your child rotate the cone.
  • Remove it from the bowl and set it aside.
  • Make sure to cover your cone completely!
  • Cut the tip off of the ice cream cone and thread the pipe cleaner through. On the end tie a knot so it won’t slip through. Take the other end and make a loop and twist to connect.
  • Spread the peanut butter over the entire cone and place cheerios around the sides.
  • Place a cone in a bow of bird seeds and gently press down as you rotate the cone. Ensure it is covered completely in seed.

Once your ice cream cone bird feeders are hung up, it’s time for the best part—watching the birds enjoy their tasty treat! Encourage your kids to observe which types of birds visit and even keep a little journal to note their favorite visitors.

This simple and fun activity is a great way to teach kids about nature, responsibility, and the importance of caring for wildlife. Plus, since the cones are completely biodegradable, there’s no waste left behind!
